According to the Star Tribune, for the fifth year in a row, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area has ranked #1 for volunteerism among large cities. This number can be found in the newly released statistics from the federal government's Corporation for National and Community Service.
37.1% of Twin Citians volunteered in 2010, as reported from the research. The other top five major metro areas along with Minneapolis include Portland, Ore. (36.2%), Salt Lake City (34.1%), Seattle (33.9%), and Rochester, NY (33.8%). By state, the top five are Utah (44.5%), Iowa (37.9%), Minnesota (37.5%), Nebraska (37.4%), and South Dakota (37.2%).
Nationwide, 62.8 million adults served nearly 8.1 billion hours through organizations in 2010, which is an amazing feat! However, the percentages reported could actually be higher since the figures in the survey track only "formal" volunteers who work at agencies and nonprofits. It doesn't count, for example, neighbors helping neighbors.
The annual Volunteering In America report determined that services provided were valued at nearly $173 billion to communities and the nation last year. In addition, 26.5% were involved in fundraising for an organization, 23.5% collected, prepared, distributed, or served food, and 20.3% offered general labor or transportation.
