We all like to think that working safely is a matter of common sense – but the fact is that it’s easy to forget the basics in any workplace, particularly when it’s busy. The numbers and types of Minnesota workers compensation insurance claims would certainly suggest that we do forget. Here are some of the most basic practices that will help to keep your workers safe:

At the computer:

  • Ensure ergonomically correct workstations, with supportive chairs
  • Ensure that those working on computers all day take frequent breaks to stretch.
  • Encourage computer workers to regularly look away from the screen and focus on distant objects.

Carrying/lifting:

  • Train workers in correct lifting techniques.
  • Encourage workers to share the load or use a dolly for very heavy items.

Around the workplace:

  • Keep shelves, storage areas and walkways free of clutter.
  • Always keep fire exits and paths clear.
  • Have spills attended to quickly and discourage running in the workplace.
  • Ensure staff members are trained in the proper use of equipment.
  • Ensure all staff members are wearing protective clothing including overalls, hard hats, gloves and/or goggles when required.
  • Train workers to behave with due caution around heat, chemicals and heights.

Being informed is one of the best ways of staying safe in any workplace, and avoiding Minnesota workers compensation insurance claims. Like other types of insurance, an abundance of worker injury claims could see your premiums increase.
